Man who burned Guan Eng's photo attacked

BUTTERWORTH: A legal firm runner was attacked by a group of men and he claimed the attack could be linked to his action of setting alight a poster of Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng during a Penang Barisan Nasional Youth demonstration on Nov 30.

S. Krishnan, 47, received 16 stitches on his right thigh at the Seberang Jaya Hospital but was not warded. He also sustained bruises on the neck, back and hips.

Krishnan, whose nickname is Mak Mandin Kumar, said he was on his motorcycle and heading home in Taman Mak Mandin after dinner at 10pm on Sunday when the attack took place.

In pain: Krishnan relating the incident to Chua (right) and Sum at the Seberang Jaya Hospital on SundayHe said he had sought refuge at a petrol station in Jalan Permatang Pauh, about 1km from his home, when he realised that he was being tailed by a group of men on motorcycles.

“I left the petrol station 10 minutes later when I thought the coast was clear,” he added. Krishnan said he was, however, cornered by eight men on four motorcycles at a remote spot at the Mak Mandin light industrial area.

He said six of them, including two armed with kitchen knives, attacked him while the other two stood as lookouts.

Speaking to reporters at his home yesterday, Krishnan said several of the men shouted “Cut off his legs!” in Tamil.

He said he called his friends after the assailants fled and they took him to the hospital where Bagan MCA division Youth Chief David Chua and the division’s vice-chairman, Sum Yoo Keong, visited him.

Chua said he visited Krishnan as they were involved in helping residents of Rumah Hijau in Mak Mandin, who are facing eviction.

Krishan had lodged a report at the Mak Mandin police station on Sunday night.

‘Help Rumah Hijau folk’

BAGAN MCA division Youth chief David Chua has handed over a memorandum to Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, urging him to personally intervene in the plight of Rumah Hijau families who are facing eviction.

Chua, who was accompanied by a small group of affected residents, to the state administrative base in Komtar, urged the state to engage the Rumah Hijau residents and developer in negotiations so they could come to an amicable solution.

“The residents are hoping to be relocated within the same area as the area has many amenities such as places of worship, clinics and schools.

“If the residents are relocated to low-cost flats 3km away, they will be burdened with transportation costs,” Chua said before handing over the memorandum to Lim’s political secretary Ng Wei Aik yesterday.

About 240 families of Rumah Hijau in Mak Mandin, Butterworth, are facing eviction as the land on which their homes stand, has been earmarked for a redevelopment housing scheme.

Out of this number, some 170 families have accepted keys to low-cost flats while the remaining families are adamant on staying in their Rumah Hijau long houses, Chua said.

He also urged the state to consider aliena-ting one of the neighbouring plots of land around Rumah Hijau at a reasonable price to build a block of low-cost flats for the residents.

“We hope this suggestion will get the support and help from the state and Federal Governments.

“The Federal Government must help as Barisan Nasional has a responsibility to the people,’’ he said.

Prevention is better than cure

Proper way to wear it: Chua (right) and MCA Bagan division vice chairman Sum Yoo Keong (left) distributing the masks at Apollo Market in Jalan Raja Uda, Butterworth.

By M. SIVANANTHA SHARMA

THOSE patronising the Apollo Market along Jalan Raja Uda in Butterworth recently received a pleasant surprise when several MCA Youth members distributed free face masks, leaflets and instant hand sanitisers to them.

Bagan MCA division Youth head David Chua Teik Siang said the event was organised to create public health awareness following the influenza A (H1N1) flu pandemic.

“We believe the approach of going to the ground to meet people is the most effective,’’ he said.

About 6,000 masks, 1,000 leaflets and 100 hand sanitisers were given away during the campaign which lasted about two hours at the Apollo Market.

Chua noted that many were not taking precautionary measures, especially the wearing of the face mask, seriously despite repeated reminders by the health authorities.

He said the people should inculcate the culture of taking precautionary measures as prevention is better than cure.

Several people slowed down their vehicles and asked for the face masks while some even asked for extra ones during the campaign.

Irene Liew, 37, a housewife praised the MCA Youth for their caring attitude in embarking on the awareness campaign about the viral flu.

Indira Siva, 27, an accountant said other organisations including non-governmental organisations (NGOs) should emulate the wing as such efforts would benefit the community.

Mad at Guan Eng for bad-mouthing MCA

BUTTERWORTH – A supporter of Ong Tee Keat charged at a dinner table where Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was seated and criticised him for allegedly bad-mouthing the MCA president.

“Guan Eng made unreasonable comments about my party at a public gathering, where members from various political parties were present.

“It was not a political forum and he was out of line,” Bagan MCA division Youth chief David Chua told national daily The Star on Monday, when asked about his action.

Whisked away before matters turned ugly

The incident happened at about 9.45pm on Sunday, after Guan Eng delivered a brief speech and had returned to the VIP table at the dinner function organised by the Taman Dedap/ Jalan 6 Phor Thor temple committee.

Chua stood at the VIP table and also asked state executive councilor and Bagan Jermal assemblyman Lim Hock Seng why the MCA was condemned in such a manner.

“Luckily, a few friends quickly whisked me away before matters turned ugly,” the MCA loyalist said.

'He came rushing at us'

Hock Seng, when contacted by the daily, claimed that apart from charging forward in a threatening manner, Chua also shook the table as if he wanted to overturn it.

“Chua, seated three or four tables away, suddenly came rushing towards us,” he said.

Asked about the incident when Guan Eng was a visiting the KPJ Penang Specialist Hospital in Bandar Perda, Bukit Mertajam on National Day, the chief minister said he was surprised by Chua’s action.

MCA leaders back Ong to overcome challenges

By NG CHENG YEE

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA leaders at all levels have pledged their full support to party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat in overcoming the current challenges, said party vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

He said the delegates understood the hurdles that Ong was facing and believed that what he was doing was in the interest of the party and the Barisan Nasional.

“We discussed many issues, including the Port Klang Free Zone project as well as the RM10mil claims.

“The delegates understand that the president is a cabinet minister and he has to carry out his duties as the Transport Minister to strengthen the commitment for reform,” he told reporters after attending a special briefing session by Ong at Wisma MCA here Sunday.

Liow said Wanita chief Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun had also cleared the air at the meeting on allegations that she had received a total of RM35,000 on two occasions from Kuala Dimensi Sdn Bhd CEO Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

“It is not true that she took the money. There were donations to some fundraising programmes which she headed,” he said.

Many unaware of RM320 increase in aid

David Chua Teik Siang (second right) observe the session.

Many poor families are not getting welfare aid from the government as they have yet to register with the Penang Welfare Department.

Bagan MCA division vice chairman Sum Yoo Keong said many were still unaware that the government’s monthly welfare aid had been increased from RM400 to RM720 effective this year.

Eligible individuals must register with the department or else the aid would not reach them, he said.

He added that to help them register, two MCA members had recently taken up temporary posts as community development assistants in the department.

Sum said Bagan division member Cheng Lee Sin, 18, took up the post on Feb 1 to serve people in Butterworth.

He said Kepala Batas MCA division deputy secretary Tan Teow Joo, 35, took up a similar position since October last to serve people in Kepala Batas.

“The duo have also gone to the streets to look for poor individuals and disabled people, who are eligible for the aid, and help them register,” he added.
