MCA mobile service on monthly basis

THE Bagan MCA Youth division plans to conduct its 1Bagan Mobile Service on a monthly basis following the overwhelming response from the public.

Its chief David Chua (pic) said his division planned to hold the programme every month after the large turnout for its third 1Bagan Mobile service at Taman Bagan Jaya near Butterworth on Saturday.

The event was launched by Teluk Air Tawar assemblyman Datuk Jahara Hamid and jointly hosted by the Kawasan Rukun Tetngga Taman Bagan Jaya.

In praising the Bagan MCA Youth’s effort, Jahara said such programmes should be ongoing.

She said the event would help forge a closer rapport between the public and the component parties of Barisan Nasional (BN).

The programme, from 9am to 1pm, also attracted 50 people who registered for the Rakan Cop at the police booth set up by the North Seberang Prai district police headquarters.

During the event, a North Seberang Prai National Drug Agency team led by its officer Ahmad Jafar held an exhibition and a drug awareness talk while a medical team comprising a doctor and nine nurses conducted free medical checks for the needy.

Other organisations present included the Welfare Department and the Elections Commission, which set up a booth to register new voters and change addresses of existing voters.

Chua, who is also the BN co- ordinator for Bagan Parliamen-tary area, together with Bagan Dalam BN coordinator Datuk P.K. Subbaiyah, later presented 50 food hampers to the poor at the Taman Bagan Jaya low cost flats in conjunction with Deepavali.

Other BN coordinators present were Maggie Teh (Bagan Jermal) and Sum Yoo Keong (Sungai Puyu) as well as Taman Bagan Jaya Rukun Tetangga chairman Mohd Nordin Saad.

Rela needs true volunteers

Time : 10.30AM | Venue :Dewan Persatuan Ang Si Chong Soo, MK 14, Lorong Segar Jaya, Taman Segar, Mak Mandin, Butterworth |

BUTTERWORTH: The public should not be forced or pressured into joining Rela, said Deputy Home Minister Datuk Lee Chee Leong.

He said they should only volunteer for the corps if they were genuine about serving the community.

“In our enthusiasm to register more new recruits, we should not overlook the conditions and criteria that are in place.

“Members of the public should not be made to feel they are obligated to join Rela.

■ Honorary majors: Bagan MCA Youth chief David Chua Teik Siang (second from right) and Bagan MCA vice-chairman Sum Yoo Keong (third right) attending the recruitment drive in Butterworth yesterday.

“This is necessary to ensure we have a group of good quality members who are capable of carrying out Rela’s mission and vision,” he said when launching a campaign to recruit Rela members in the Bagan parliamentary constituency in Mak Mandin here yesterday.

Lee said although the corps had set a high target of achieving 2.6 million members by December from the current 2.1 million, the question of quantity should be secondary.

He also stressed that there was no hidden agenda behind the corps’ ongoing house-to-house recruitment drive.

“We merely want to invite as many Malaysians as possible to experience the spirit of volunteerism so that this will not diminish in our society,” he said.

Lee also advised Rela members to maintain discipline, disposition and friendliness in order for the corps to obtain recognition, which would in turn further spur the Government’s confidence in them.

He said Malaysians were now wise enough to value what was given to them and had the right to reject anything that was unbeneficial.

“That is why the Government is working hard for the people and is sensitive towards their needs and requests,” he said.

Also present at the function were Rela deputy director-general Datuk Mustafa Ibrahim and Penang Rela director Romli Awang.

Hopeful of a rebound

THE state MCA has not given up despite losing all state seats in Penang during the last general election, said its Wanita chief Tan Cheng Liang.

“It must be remembered that in 1990, we lost most of the seats but in the following election, the people voted us back to power.

“Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak recently came up with the 1Malaysia concept to build a nation with all races united,” she said in her speech during the Majlis Makan Malam Bulan Tanlung held at a restaurant in Chai Leng Park on Friday.

Tan, who is also Nibong Tebal MCA chief and Barisan Nasional co-ordinator for Jawi, said the party did have its own problems but the members have to be strong and united to overcome them.

She also urged veteran members to disseminate the right information to the voters as they (voters) have regretted voting Barisan out of Penang.

About 60 members of the Wanita Veteran Bureau attended the dinner held in conjunction with the Mid-Autumn festival celebrations.

Also present were event organising chairman Kuan Choy Chun Kun, Bagan MCA Wanita chief Teh Lay Cheng and Bagan MCA division vice chairman Sum Yoo Keong.

1Bagan Mobile service team's first community service

WHEN the 1Bagan Mobile service team conducted its first community service, they only expected a handful of people to turn up at the Tow Boo Kong Temple in Jalan Raja Uda, Butterworth.

But they were proven wrong when more than 125 people thronged the temple premises to take advantage of the free medical checkup, which included sugar level and blood pressure screening, from 8.30am till noon on Sunday.

Bagan MCA Youth chief David Chua said eight volunteers from the Segi Nursing College on the island conducted the medical check-up with help from Sungai Dua government health clinic representatives.

"The state Welfare Department also sent a six-member team to register the poor for welfare aid. More than 20 people registered for welfare aid on that day."

"At the same time, the Election Commission also set up at booth and managed to register about 100 new voters." he said in a press statement on Monday.

Chua, who is also Bagan parliamentary Barisan Nasional(BN) co-ordinator, said MCA members from the Bagan division turned up in full force to help.

State should refer to BN constituency coordinators

SEBERANG PERAI (Aug 29, 2010): Barisan Nasional (BN) representatives appointed by the Prime Minister’s Department as “constituency coordinators” in areas won by the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) in the last general election insist they are legitimate federal officers whom the state should refer to when applying for federal funding.

MCA Bagan division youth chief David Chua, who is the coordinator for the Bagan constituency, where the MP is Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, said the state’s two municipal councils would benefit by referring their applications to the coordinators who are in a position to evaluate the needs of the people in the area.

He explained that the coordinators were officers on the ground to represent the State Development Officer (SDO) who is appointed by the Prime Minister’s Department to oversee federal allocations in Penang.

“These are federal funds the councils are asking for. So the applications would have to go through federal officers,” he said.

Chua said when announcing the BN’s 1Bagan Community Service Team recently. Also present was state MIC chairman Datuk P.K. Subbaiyah, who is the Bagan Dalam state constituency coordinator.

On Aug 19, Penang executive councillor Chow Kon Yeow, who is also the state DAP chairman, had revealed that the SDO had told the two councils at a meeting on Aug 4 to get the agreement from the BN coordinators before applying for funding for next year.

The state government has since asked for the directive to be made in writing and for a copy of the meeting’s minutes.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop, later told reporters the councils were merely asked to discuss the use of the funds with the coordinators.

Although the Penang island and Seberang Perai municipal councils (MPPP and MPSP) had in the past applied for their allocations to the Housing and Local Government Ministry, this was changed after the last general election when PR won the state. The councils were then required to apply through the SDO instead.

Calling SDO Nik Ali Mat Yunos his "boss", Chua took the PR state government to task for its barrage of criticisms against him. -- theSun

MCA division sets up service team to help needy folk

COME tomorrow(28 August), the Bagan MCA division in Penang will launch the 1Bagan Community Service Team aimed at helping the people.

Bagan MCA division Youth chief David Chua said the team would be going around their divisions to register new voters and provide assistance to single mothers, the handicapped, poor and needy.

“Representatives from the Federal Government together with the state Welfare Department, state Health Department and Election Commission will be present at the launching.

“It will be held at the Tow Boo Kong Temple on Jalan Raja Uda from 8.30am,” he told a press conference at the Bagan MCA division headquarters on Jalan Kampung Benggali.

“Even though Barisan Nasional lost some of the seats in the last general election, we are still committed to helping the folk,” he said.

Also present were state MIC liaison committee chairman Datuk P.K. Subbaiyah, Bagan MCA Wanita chief Teh Lay Cheng and Bagan MCA division vice-chairman Sum Yoo Keong.

Chua, who is also the Barisan Nasional parliamentary co-ordinator, said the service team would go around the Bagan constituency looking for people to help.

Subbaiyah praised the people’s outreach programme to be carried out by the Bagan MCA.

Butterworth : Aid for 23 needy people

A TOTAL of 23 poor people in Butterworth, including the disabled, received RM300 aid each from the Federal Government through the Social Welfare Department.

They will receive the amount every month till January next year.

The money was presented to them by Bagan Barisan Nasional coordinator David Chua, Sungai Puyu Barisan coordinator Sum Yoo Keong and Bagan Jermal Barisan coordinator Maggie Teh Lay Cheng.

Sum said the Bagan MCA applied for the funds after it was approached by the poor people.

Help for the disabled: Sum (blue shirt) handing over a cheque to Chuah Seng Guan (third left) during a cheque presentation at the Bagan MCA service centre in Butterworth. With them are Chua (right) and Teh (left).

“We have so far managed to obtain cash aid for 271 people which include single mothers, senior citizens and also the disabled,” he said after the presentation ceremony at the Bagan MCA service centre in Butterworth recently.

He said the 271 people, including the 23 recipients, would receive a total of RM429,000 ranging from RM135 to RM450 per person depending on their financial background.

Chua said the aid given to the needy showed that the Federal Government was committed towards helping the poor irrespective of race or religion.

“Claims by the state government that they had eradicated hardcore poverty in Penang is not true because thousands of people are still receiving financial aid from the Federal Government,” he said.

Teh urged single mothers, who are going through hard times, to approach her for help.

A recipient, Tan Seng Hock, 62, said he was grateful to the MCA for its assistance in securing the cash aid for him.

Yen Yen: Use enactment against illegal operators along Batu Ferringhi

THE Tourism Ministry has asked the Penang Government to use the Personal Watercraft (Penang) Enactment 1999 against unlicensed traders and beach activity operators.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen urged the state authority to use the enactment effectively by granting the permit for the use of personal watercraft only to those who were eligible.

“Come out with guidelines for these operators to comply with, for instance, a well-trained instructor and security measures, before granting them the permit.

“The state government also has the power to arrest, search and seize any illegal beach activity as it is an offence for those who contravene any provision of this enactment,” she told a press conference at the Penang International Airport yesterday.

■ Firm action: Dr Ng showing Penang hotel representatives the Personal Watercraft (Penang) Enactment 1999 yesterday.

Dr Ng said the issuance of water sport activity permit came under the purview of the state government as the Tourism Ministry was only responsible for issuing licences for tour operators, tourist guides and tour buses.

“Tourism is a very fragile industry so I am pleading to the state authority to take immediate action and place enforcement officers along the beach to monitor the situation,” she said.

She said the Penang police would hold a meeting with all agencies involved today to study a long term solution against beach touts.

Dr Ng was commenting on reports of unruly beach touts who allegedly endangered hotel guests’ safety and harassed them to take up the beach activities.

“We have a total of 5.4 million tourists visiting Penang in 2009 and of those, 1.2 million of them visited Batu Ferringhi.

“Among them, 600,000 tourists visited the Batu Ferringhi beach, so this is a very serious matter,” she said.

About 70 unlicensed operators offered beach-related activities — buggy rides, horse riding, para-sailing and water scootering — along the 3km-long stretch (behind Golden Sands Resort and Parkroyal Penang) to both local and foreign tourists.

Penang police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Wira Ayub Yaakob, who was also present at the press conference, said police would be monitoring the area on a daily basis to make sure there were no unlicensed traders and beach activity operators along the beach.

When contacted, state Local Government and Traffic Manage-ment Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) had to demarcate the zone first for beach operators to run their business before using the enactment.

“We don’t want to go after them because they are there to make a living. It was an attitude issue when they started harassing and intimidating the hotel guests,” said Chow.

A joint operation by state and federal agencies, codenamed Ops Sepadu, will be taking place today to put a stop to the illegal activities which have been marring the image of the famous stretch for decades.

The operation will be led by the police and targeted to clear the stretch of DVD and counterfeit goods stalls, unlicensed entertainment and eatery joints as well as unauthorised water sport activities.

Among the agencies involved in the operation are MPPP, Customs Department, Immigration Depart-ment, Anti Drug Agency and Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Ministry.

MCA: Resolve ‘Allah’ issue fast

PETALING JAYA: Christian groups want the issue over the use of the word Allah in Christian publications to be resolved as soon as possible, said MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.

“The MCA presidential council held a dialogue with the Christian Federation of Malaysia last week and the non-governmental organisation felt there was a need for the issue to be resolved as soon as possible,” said Dr Chua in a press statement.

He clarified that the MCA did not share the same stand with the DAP on the call to lift the ban on the use of “Allah” by non-Muslims.

Dr Chua explained that the MCA was only voicing out the wish of the NGO because the issue had not been resolved since it was brought up last year.

“We are not making the same stand as DAP. We only want the Barisan Nasional government to resolve the issue as soon as possible so that it will not be exploited further by the Opposition,” said Dr Chua.

The MCA president was responding to a statement yesterday by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who said he did not understand why the MCA, as a component party of the Barisan, had joined the stand taken by DAP in calling for the ban on the use of the word Allah to be lifted.

“The (Barisan) component parties agreed it (the issue over the use of the word Allah) should not be debated any more, as it will heat up matters that have since cooled down.

“It is best not to start the issue again. Consider the interest of the public and not the interest of any specific group, be it a political or administrative group,” the Deputy Prime Minister told a press conference after chairing the Cabinet Committee on Youth Development meeting here yesterday.

He was commenting on calls by several parties that Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein lift the ban on the use of the word Allah in Christian publications.

Muhyiddin said it was best that all parties leave it to the courts to decide.

Work more talk less, members told

WORK more and talk less — this was the message delivered by Penang MCA deputy chairman Datuk Dr Loh Hock Hun to members during his winding-up speech at the party’s state convention 2010 yesterday.

“All of you must work every single minute, as the more you talk the more mistakes are made.

“Therefore, work hard and gain back the confidence of the people. All this must be done in solidarity,” he said.

Earlier Penang MCA Youth head Eng Hiap Boon in his speech questioned if the Federal Government or the state government was ignorant when it came to the issue of illegal water sport operators.

All ears: About 600 MCA delegates attended the annual state MCA convention at Vistana Hotel in Penang yesterday.

“Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen had already told the state government to look into the issue during her visit to Penang Hill in March this year.”

He was commenting on Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s statement that the state government would enforce the Personal Watercraft (Penang) Enactment 1999 against illegal water sport operators only as a last resort, despite Dr Ng making an appeal to the state to adopt the enactment.

Penang Wanita chief Tan Cheng Liang, also in her winding-up speech, said divisional Wanita leaders were placing strong emphasis on nurturing Wanita members aged below 35.

She said it was vital to provide training to these group members earmarked as leaders of the next generation.

“With proper training, especially on eloquence, these members can effectively assist party candidates to face the opposition in the next general election.

“They can then bring into play in whatever they have learnt from such training,” she said, adding that only 3,600 of the 20,000 Penang Wanita members are aged below 35.

Tan also said each division must set up their own social networking sites such as Facebook or blogs.

“Worse come to worse, each member must at least have an e-mail account to enable easy communication among members,” she said, revealing that 60% of the state Wanita Committee members have e-mail accounts.

Meanwhile, state MCA Education bureau chief Goh Poh Chuan said UPSR must be retained, adding it was relevant to gauge the pupils after six years in school.

The move will also ensure that students are always on their toes and will not be slack in their studies.

Expose DAP-led govt’s flaws, state MCA urged

PENANG MCA must expose the flaws in the DAP-led state government so the public will be aware of them.

This is the role of an effective Opposition who must constantly remind the Government of its need to fulfil its duties, state MCA liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said.

“As of now, there are several issues such as the illegal water sport activities in Batu Ferringhi and the hawkers’ issue in Bukit Mertajam which I heard people claim that when ‘DAP mari(comes), hawkers mati(die)’.

“I have pointed out to the state government that it should implement the Personal Watercraft (Penang) Enactment 1999 (when addressing water sports activities) but instead it passed the ball to me,” Dr Ng, who is also Tourism Minister, said.

She lashed out at the DAP-led government for only knowing how to be the Opposition.

“We need to remind it of its duty (as a Government),” she said.

She added that party members must have a “direct touch” with the people.

“If there are any issues where the Federal Ministers can help, we will do our best to get them.

“Eventually, the people will know the difference between who talks a lot but does not work and who talks a lot and works a lot,” she said.

Dr Ng said this after launching the Barisan Nasional Bayan Baru parliamentary service centre, which commences operations today as part of the coalition’s effort to serve constituents better.

Located near a Sungai Tiram coffee shop beside a Shell petrol station, the centre opens every Monday from 8pm until 10pm.

Bayan Baru MCA division chief Tan Lai Theng said the political scenario in the state had changed with the existence of a two-party (political) system and this had prompted all parties to work harder for the people.

“Barisan needs to change outdated policies in order to serve the people better.

“Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s 1Malaysia concept is receiving good response from the people here,” he said.

He also appealed to the other Barisan components in the area to work hand in hand to win back the constituency in the next General Election.

“I believe good service coupled with good leadership can lead to success,” he stressed.

Butterworth: Help repair water tank, ICU urged

RESIDENTS of Taman Pantai Bersih flats in Bagan Ajam, Butterworth, are appealing to the Implementation and Co-ordination Unit (ICU) of the Prime Minister’s Department to help repair a faulty water tank at the flats.

The flats’ newly appointed joint management body (JMB) committee chairman Zunun Hashim said the water tank in Block C had been out of service for the last five years.

“We also hope the ICU can help repair the motor pumps of the water tanks in all three blocks A, B and C as well as repair the pumps’ automatic system,” he said during a visit from Barisan Nasional’s Bagan parliamentary co-ordinator David Chua yesterday.

Zunun said that presently, only one motor pump was operational, which provided water to all 420 flat units.

Residents' dilemma: (From left) Ibrahim showing the faulty pumps to Chua, Teh and Bagan MCA Youth vice-chairman Sum Yoo Keong on the rooftop.

The flats’ JMB secretary Ibrahim Othman, 52, said that water from the tanks located above his flat unit on the fourth floor often leaked into his house.

“It has been very inconvenient for my family and at the same time, it is sad that precious water is being wasted,” he said.

Chua said the residents owed the flat developer RCB Development Sdn Bhd maintenance arrears amounting to RM500,000.

He said they also owed TNB about RM5,000 in power bill arrears and RM2,500 to the Penang Water Supply Corporation Sdn Bhd (PBA).

“I hope RCB as well as TNB and PBA will consider waiving the residents’ debts as a goodwill gesture following the formation of a new JMB.

“Let the new JMB start afresh and I hope they will be able to do a better job than the previous management committee,” he said.

Chua also suggested that the state and federal government appoint representatives to sit on the JMB committee to ensure transparency in their operations.

He urged the committee to be strict in collecting the monthly maintenance fee of RM27.50 per unit.

Barisan Nasional’s Bagan Jermal constituency co-ordinator Teh Lay Cheng said she would join the flat residents in a campaign to clean up the vicinity on Sunday.

Top scorer gets PSD scholarship after all

GEORGE TOWN: Visually-impaired Teoh Bee Kah can be assured of a promising future now as she was informed that she had successfully obtained a Public Service Department (PSD) scholarship on Tuesday.

The scholarship is for Teoh, 18, to pursue a Business Foundation course at the University of Nottingham Malaysia campus in Semenyih.

The New Straits Times had highlighted Teoh's plight on June 20 after her application for a scholarship was rejected.

The former SMK Convent Pulau Tikus student had scored 4A+ and 6As in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination last year.

Teoh, who suffers from nystagmus, a condition that causes involuntary eye movements was the top special student in the examination in Penang.

When contacted, an elated Teoh said she was happy to be given the scholarship.

"I am looking forward to pursuing my studies in the university.

"I want to thank all of those who have helped me along the way. Words can't express how grateful I am."

Teoh, who had initially wanted to pursue a degree in psychology, will be reporting to the university on July 8.

She is currently studying in St Xavier's Institution for her Lower Six.

Teoh's mother, Kim Guat Khim, 50, said although her daughter failed to get the course of her choice, she was, however, contented with the course offered to her.

"I want to thank the PSD for the scholarship.

"I also want to thank Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong for taking an interest in my daughter's case.

"In fact, he called me up twice, once on Monday and the following day to congratulate me," she said, adding that she was also grateful to others for their help, including state MCA chief Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen.

Student gets PSD scholarship, thanks to MCA

GEORGE TOWN: A student who failed to get a government scholarship twice to pursue higher studies is now rejoicing, thanks to the MCA.

Teoh Bee Kah, 18, who failed to get the scholarship earlier, has been granted a Public Service Department scholarship after she sent an appeal letter to MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen.

Teoh, who was born with the nystagmus condition (a form of involuntary eye movement), was awarded a full scholarship for an 18-month Foundation in Business Studies course at the University of Nottingham’s Malaysian campus in Semenyih.

The former Convent Pulau Tikus student, who is now studying in Form Six at St Xavier’s Institution, will start the course on July 8.

“I was verbally guaranteed a National Scholarship on March 19 when I went to Putrajaya to receive an award for being an outstanding student.

■ She got it: Teoh showing her parents, father Lye and mother Kim Guat Khim the congratulatory letter she received from Dr Ng.

“However, the name list came out a week later without my name. So, I thought I would be accepted by the PSD. But my name wasn’t in that list either when it came out on May 21.

“I cried for two days after that because I was so disappointed,” she said after receiving a congratulatory letter from Bagan MCA division Youth chief David Chua on behalf of Dr Ng at the Penang MCA headquarters on Pahang Road here yesterday.

Teoh, who scored 4A+, 3As and 3A- in last year’s SPM examination, said although her first choice was Psychology, she was nevertheless grateful for the scholarship.

She said her nystagmus condition was made difficult with her short-sightedness.

“My eyeballs are constantly moving and it is difficult for me to focus. Doctors told me my condition cannot be corrected with spectacles or surgery,” she said.

Her father, Lye Chuan, 58, said she did not let her condition stand in her way.

“She didn’t attend any tuition classes. Her hearing and memory are excellent too,” said the fisherman.

Penang Govt taken to task over demolition

Friday May 14, 2010

THE Penang Government has turned a deaf ear to numerous appeals made by the Rumah Hijau Residents Association over the tearing down of the vacant houses at the Rumah Hijau longhouses in Mak Mandin, Butterworth.

Bagan parliamentary coordinator and Bagan MCA division Youth chief David Chua(pic at right three), who said this, also claimed there was no proper planning when the demolition was carried out recently.

“The empty houses are attached to other houses. Because of that, water seeps in from the side when it rains,” he said.

“To make things worse, the site has become a mosquito breeding ground because of the debris, clogged drains and pot holes,” he said in a press statement on Wednesday.
Chua claimed a 12-year-old boy was now sick with dengue fever.

He said during a meeting attended by state Town and Country Planning and Housing Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai and state Public Works, Utilities and Transportation Committee chairman Lim Hock Seng with leaders from Barisan Nasional at Wong’s office last month, it was agreed that the residents would not be forced to move out from their houses.

Barisan was represented by Bagan Umno division chief Datuk Latiff Mirasa and state MIC liaison committee chief Datuk P.K. Subbaiyah.

Chua called upon the executive councillors to put aside politics and assist the Rumah Hijau folk to solve the long-standing issue once and for all.

Rumah Hijau Resident Association chairman A. Tamil Selvam said he went to Lim’s service centre on Jalan Raja Uda near Butterworth last week to request for him to stop the demolition work.

However, he claimed Lim did not entertain him and said he had nothing to do with the demolition work.

Last November, 170 of the 236 families from the area accepted the keys to their flats.

The remaining 66 families, who declined the offer, have chosen to remain in their village while demanding that the state build a block of flats within the village.

Kerajaan negeri takutkan penduduk Rumah Hijau Mak Mandin

BUTTERWORTH: Seperti lagak samseng.

Tetapi, lihatlah apa berlaku sekarang.

Polystyrene window frame shock for house buyers

By DERRICK VINESH
derrickvinesh@thestar.com.my

BUTTERWORTH: Several house buyers in Taman Ampang Jajar here had a rude shock when they checked the houses – the outer frames of their windows were made from polystyrene.

A buyer, Lee Kim Tatt, 35, claimed that the polystyrene pieces were covered with a thin layer of cement.

“What would happen if a person steps on the window sill, thinking that it was made of concrete?” he asked when Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) president Mokhtar Mohd Jait visited the project site yesterday.

■Not sturdy: Lee showing the polystyrene used for his house in Taman Ampang Jajar in Butterworth, Penang, yesterday.

A representative for the project’s architect said the frames were merely decorative pieces that should not be stepped on.

Another buyer, Yan Wei Seong, 33, claimed the houses did not follow the original plan as per the sale and purchase agreement (S&P) signed in 2006.

“Some units in a particular row have double steps leading to the back lane while some in the same row only have one step, which shows that the ground is uneven,” he alleged.

Barisan Nasional’s Bagan parliamentary constituency co-ordinator David Chua, who was present, said he was surprised that the relevant departments and agencies had given the green light for the MPSP to issue the Certificate of Fitness (CF) to a majority of the units in 2008.

“How could the CF be given when some of the units are not in good condition?

“Access to these houses is also blocked with hoardings and there are no street lights in this area,” he said.

Mokhtar said the developer had agreed to extend the defect-liability period for the housing units by another two years.

“Disgruntled house buyers are advised to list down their grouses, so we can hold further discussion with the developer.

“We will try to come up with amicable solutions,” he added.

Mokhtar said of the 101 housing units, 22 units as well as 17 shophouses had yet to receive their CFs, pending approval from the relevant departments and agencies.

Penduduk Rumah Hijau bengang Adun DAP lepas tangan

Turut hadir Ketua UMNO Bahagian Bagan, Datuk Abdul Latif Mirasa.

– Utusan Malaysia

BN ideas on the table

By WINNIE YEOH

THE Penang Government will adopt a non-political approach to resolve the Rumah Hijau longhouse issue in Mak Mandin. A total of 66 families there have refused to relocate to another place.

State Town and Country Plan-ning, Housing and Arts Commit-tee chairman Wong Hon Wai said he would look into the proposals submitted by state Barisan Nasional leaders and also the financial implications.

“The leaders explained the history of the longhouse issue and the state government needs some time to look into the matter,” he said after a one-hour closed-door meeting with state Barisan leaders in Komtar on Friday.

Among those present were state MIC chairman P. K. Subbai-yah, Bagan Umno division chief Datuk Abdul Latiff Mirasa, Bagan MCA division Youth chief David Chua, state exco member Lim Hock Seng and some 20 residents.

Some of the residents are unhappy that they have to move to other flats in Ampang Jajar, some 3km away from the longhouses.

Last November, 170 of the 236 families there accepted the keys to their flats.

The remaining 66 families, who declined the offer, have chosen to remain in their village while demanding that the state build a block of flats within the village.

Abdul Latiff said there was an understanding between the previous state government and the residents that a block would be built there.

“The state government is quite sympathetic and is looking seriously into resolving the issue.

“The residents will stay put until a solution is found,” he said.

Chua said Barisan leaders told Wong and Lim to study minutes of the previous meetings as it could shed some light on the issue.

“The state government has agreed to check and get back to us,” he said.

Subbaiyah said there was a letter dated June 13, 2007, from the previous state govern- ment stating that the residents would be allowed to live there but there was no follow-up action.

Drawing people together

IN the spirit of 1Malaysia, Bagan Barisan Nasional (BN) organised a Juara Rakyat programme in Mak Mandin in Penang recently which attracted about 1,000 people from all walks of life.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of food hampers comprising rice, biscuits and other items to 250 poor people.

Bagan Umno division chief Datuk Abdul Latiff Mirasa gave away the food hampers.

The event kicked off with an aerobics session at 7.30am which drew residents and leaders of political parties.

Bagan parliamentary constituency coordinator David Chua said many people participated in the various activities held on that day.

He said residents of Mak Mandin flats also took part in a fire-fighting drill to equip them with basic knowledge in the event of a fire.

“Residents also enjoyed multi-cultural performances such as silat, lion dance and BharataNatyam,” he said.

Many children also took part in a colouring contest.

Also present at the function were Bagan MCA chairman Loo Khay Thye and Bagan MCA Youth vice-chairman Sum Yoo Keong.

Residents worry over ‘unstable’ longhouses

FAMILIES still living in the Rumah Hijau longhouses in Mak Mandin, Seberang Prai, are worrying over their safety as the vacant units are being demolished causing their longhouses to be unstable.

Bagan MCA division Youth chief David Chua said on Wednesday the structures are now unstable as contractors have moved in to demolish the units vacated by families who have moved to the replacement flats in Ampang Jajar, some 3km away from their squatter village.
“The contractor rightfully should only demolish the front and the back portion and leave the dividing wall of each unit but now these walls have been brought down causing the structures to be unstable as water is seeping in.
“I was informed by association chairman A. Tamil Selvam that when he spoke to State Public Works, Utilities and Transportation Committee chairman Lim Hock Seng, I was told that Lim had given the directive to tear down the units,” he said when contacted yesterday.

However, Chua said when the association representatives met State Health, Welfare and Caring Society Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh, who is Sungai Puyu assemblyman, they were told that the contractor should not tear down the units.

“Why are the families given different versions of what is happening when their lives are in danger?” he questioned.

He added that the state was not serious in helping the families solve the problem as they were delaying inviting representatives from Barisan Nasional to discuss the fate of the remaining families at the longhouses.

“The association representatives who met state Town and Country Planning, Housing and Arts Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai just before Chinese New Year in February were told that the state would hold a meeting with Barisan representatives, the affected families and the association representatives.

“But it has since been a month now and there is no such invitation from the state. Why is there a delay if the state is serious in helping?” he asked.

When contacted, Wong said it was not true that the state did not want to meet the families.
“We have met them a couple of times and the state will meet with the affected families again on March 30,” he said.

Federal Govt gives cash aid to fire victims

(Feb 2010)Five families, whose houses were razed in a fire in Bagan Lallang in Butterworth, Penang, on Tuesday, received cash aid from the Federal Goverment through the BN Co-ordinators.

Bagan Barisan Parliamentary co-ordinators David Chua, who visited the victims with Bagan Jermal MCA branch co-ordinators Maggie Teh and Sungai Puyu MCA Branch co-ordinator Sum Yoo Keong, handed each family RM500.00 on Wednesday.

Chua in a press statement said apart from handing them the money from the disaster fund, he would look into ways to help the victims as Chinese New Year is just around the corner.

They were made homeless after the 9am fire. Their belongings were also destroyed together with a Proton Waja and a Perodua kancil.
